About Denton Invitational Racing Pigeon Club

In 1965, five men who had the common bond of enjoying racing pigeons came together to form what was known as the Denton Racing Pigeon Club. Those men were Jim Self, Russell Brown, Louis Sams, Warner Williams and Mansell Smith. These five men formed the list of charter members required to request membership into the national pigeon racing body known as the American Racing Pigeon Union.

In 1966, the Denton Racing Pigeon Club participated in it's first official race series.
In 1967 the small club grew quickly as an influx of junior members joined. The junior members were Joe Self, Bo Self, Rick Smith, Sil Smith, Louis Sams Jr, Mead Sams and the son of Russell Brown. As you can see the senior membership was quickly outnumbered by the juniors.

At the January 2006 meeting of the Denton Racing Pigeon Club, the membership voted to change the name of the club to the Denton Invitational Racing Pigeon Club.
The year 2007 will be the 42nd Birthday of our club. Mansell Smith, a charter member of the club still promotes the sport and actively competes each week. Our club has grown from five members to well over thirty. Each year we have an auction race titled the Louis Sams Memorial Auction Race. The auction race not only pays tribute to a member who has passed but it helps to raise funding for the club each year. In addition, the DIRPC have purchased the TEXAS GUSHER RACE and the property and have move our club to that new location. In addition to the TEXAS GUSHER RACE we have added another  race known as the TEXAS SHOWDOWN. We all are excited and looking forward to this new adventure in big one loft racing. Fanciers from across the USA participate in this coveted race each year. The Denton Invitational Racing Pigeon Club is a member of the North Texas Concourse.
